The US Senate averted a partial shutdown of the federal government by passing a government funding bill just hours before a deadline.

By a 75-22 vote, the US Senate approved a $467.5 billion spending package that will fund agriculture, transportation, housing, veterans, and other programs through the end of the fiscal year on Sept. 30.

The signature of US President Joe Biden is now left, since a few days ago the bill also passed the Republican-controlled House of Representatives.

Congress must also reach agreement on a much larger spending package, covering the military, homeland security, health care and other services. Funding for these programs is covered until March 22.

Cumulatively, the amount of the two packages will exceed 1.66 trillion. dollars. Far-right Republicans have pushed for deep spending cuts to curb the $34.5 trillion debt.
