A heat wave is sweeping southeast Australia today, increasing the risk of wildfires.

The Met Office has issued a warning for the Capital Territory and four states: South Australia, New South Wales, Victoria and Tasmania. It is predicted that in some areas the maximum temperature will exceed 40 degrees Celsius.

Meteorologist Sarah Scully told the ABC network that high temperatures will continue into Tuesday.

Melbourne was forecast to reach a high of 39C on Saturday, about 15 degrees above the March average. At 11:10 (local time) the mercury reached 31.5 degrees Celsius.

In New South Wales, Australia’s most populous state, firefighters battled to extinguish 19 forest fires.

Last month, tens of thousands of people were forced to leave their homes due to wildfires in the state of Victoria.

Australia is going through a period of high risk due to the El Niño weather phenomenon, which is associated with extreme conditions such as bushfires, cyclones and droughts.
