Hong Kong postpones election for chief executive amid Covid outbreak

by

Amid an outbreak of Covid-19 that has led hospitals to treat patients outdoors, Hong Kong’s chief executive Carrie Lam announced on Friday the postponement of the election for the new leader of the territory ruled by Beijing, which was scheduled for March 27, according to the South China Morning Post.

According to Lam, the election moved to May 8. The announcement comes two days after Chinese leader Xi Jinping warned that fighting the coronavirus must be a priority for local authorities.

This is the second time that the former British colony, returned to China in 1997, has used the pandemic as a justification for postponing elections. The legislative ones, which were supposed to take place in September 2020, ended up being held only in December 2021.
