A “direct threat” to our societies, “which have been founded on the principles of equality and respect”, are “disturbing incidents” like the “targeted attack on two 21-year-old citizens of the (community) LGBTI+ in Thessaloniki”, he pointed out Cohesion Commissioner Elisa Ferreira speaking at the plenary session of the European Parliament on the topic: “The increase in anti-LGBTQI+ rhetoric and violence: the recent attacks in Thessaloniki”. Ms Ferreira noted that according to local media, the crowd started shouting, throwing bottles and chasing them. “All because of their sexual orientation,” he emphasized.

He underlined that “the Commission remains firm in its commitment with the aim of assuring that everyone can be whoever they want, love whoever they want without discrimination, fear or violence”. Finally, Elisa Ferreira pointed out that four years ago a decisive step was taken with the adoption of the first strategy for LGBTI+ equality in the EU.
