A worker at a gold mine died when a part of it collapsed, another was injured, while 28 were rescued, in the Australian state of Victoria (southeast), police announced today.

Emergency services were called yesterday Wednesday after part of the Mount Clear gold mine collapsed near the town of Bellarat (125 kilometers west of Melbourne), police said in a press release.

He clarified that the victim, aged 37, was crushed by “rocks” that collapsed and his body was “recovered” this morning.

“Two people were trapped”, while “another 28 were able to protect themselves”, according to the same source.

The other gold miner who was crushed by the rocks was able to free himself, was taken to hospital and remains in a “serious condition”, according to Australian police.

The rescued underwent preventive medical examinations after coming to the surface.
