Two people lost their lives already in the first hours of the bad weather “Zeynep”, which has been affecting western and northern Germany since late yesterday afternoon.
The speed of the winds on the shores of the North Sea is expected during the night to reach 170 kilometers per hour and large parts of the area – e.g. in Bremen – have been evacuated.
In many cities, including Berlin, the Fire Department has declared a state of “emergency”, while rail and road transport are facing widespread problems.
A car overturned last night due to bad weather near Zerbeck in North Rhine-Westphalia and the driver died instantly. Another man was killed in the Altenberg area of ​​the same state when he was trapped in his car, which was hit by an uprooted tree.
Late at night, the German Railways announced that they were suspending regional services in large parts of northern Germany and North Rhine-Westphalia. Earlier, a train in Hamburg collided with a tree that had fallen on the rails. None of the 40 passengers were injured, however the route was canceled as a few meters below there were other tree trunks fallen on the rails.
As of yesterday at 20:10, Berlin is in a state of “emergency”, with an announcement by the Fire Service. Citizens are being asked to stay home, keep yards and balconies clean, and deal with minor damage themselves in order to free firefighters, who have received hundreds of calls for help in recent hours.
