China equates Xi Jinping with Mao and Deng and paves the way for 3rd term

The Chinese Communist Party passed a resolution on its history and achievements, according to a publication by the state news agency Xinhua on Thursday (11).

The report, seen as a measure to further consolidate Xi Jinping’s authority at the head of the Chinese regime, is the result of the Communist Party’s sixth plenary. The event began last Monday (8) and brought together around 200 members of the party with the right to vote, plus around 170 non-voters, to discuss the direction of China.

According to Xinhua, the central committee has decided that the lesson to be learned from the party’s history, which turned 100 in July, is to remain firm in ten different areas, among which the priority is to maintain the leadership of the Chinese CP — the consolidation of Xi.

The plenary took place behind closed doors and what was discussed in Beijing should become clearer this Friday (12). But what had already drawn attention to the event was the announcement that there would be a “historic resolution” — something that has only happened twice so far.

In the first historic resolution, in 1945, in the midst of the war against Japan, the legend moved away from dissident ideological currents and defined that it would guide itself under the leadership of Mao Tse-tung.

On Monday, in 1981, under Deng Xiaoping, the plenary decided that it would condemn Mao’s Cultural Revolution, which persecuted dissidents, banned everything it saw as related to the bourgeoisie, and plunged the country into chaos.

Thus, the third resolution would aim to consolidate Xi as the regime’s strongest leader since Mao and pave its way for a third presidential term, after the country abolished limits on re-election in 2018.

According to Xinhua, the more than 350 participants at the meeting unanimously agreed with the final text of the resolution, which highlights China’s role in different aspects — from the response to the coronavirus pandemic to the modernization of defenses and the Chinese armed forces.

In a passage that mentions some of the recent challenges facing China, the resolution states that the Politburo, the highest organ of the Communist Party and the regime as a whole, has led the country in “significant advances in all areas”.

In addition to fighting the health crisis, this list includes maintaining a “good rhythm” in the economy, scientific and technological self-sufficiency, the fight against poverty, social stability and effectiveness in confronting natural disasters — the country had to dealing, for example, with historic floods that left dozens of people dead.
