The US has vetoed a Security Council vote on Palestine becoming a full member of the United Nations, a move the Israeli government vehemently rejects.

A draft resolution — drawn up and submitted to the SA by Algeria — which “recommended” to the General Assembly to approve “the State of Palestine to join as a full member state of the UN”, did not proceed, as although it received 12 votes and there were two abstentions, the negative vote, that of Washington, was decisive.

The development was initially considered a given by observers.

Palestinian Authority: “Unfair, immoral and unjustified” US veto

Mahmoud Abbas’ Palestinian Authority has condemned the US veto of a draft Security Council resolution recommending that the General Assembly approve Palestine’s admission as a full member state of the United Nations, which it sees as reflecting “aggressive politics” of Washington pushing the Middle East “to the brink of the abyss”.

“This aggressive American policy against Palestine, its people and their legitimate rights is a blatant attack on international law and an encouragement to continue the genocidal war against our people (…) It pushes the region even further to the brink of the abyss” , Mr. Abbas’s office said in a press release.

The American veto “reveals the contradictions of American policy, which pretends on the one hand to support the two-state solution, but on the other hand prevents the implementation of this solution” at the UN, he added, thanking the twelve states that supported its admission of Palestine to the organization as a full member state.

“The world is united in supporting the values of truth, justice, freedom and peace represented by the Palestinian cause,” the presidency of the Palestinian Authority, based in Ramallah, in the occupied West Bank, also ruled.

The draft resolution prepared and submitted to the SA by Algeria “recommending that the General Assembly approve the admission of Palestine as a full member state to the UN” received 12 votes, 2 member states abstained and one voted against; however, this last vote was decisive.

The US veto is “unfair, immoral and unjustified”, the Palestinian Authority said.
