Former US President Donald Trump, who is running for a second term in the White House, called on Europe on Thursday to spend more to support Ukraine in its fight against Russian invaders, ahead of a vote in the US House of Representatives to approve an aid package of 61 billions of dollars intended for Kiev.
“Why can’t Europe match or come close to the amount of money the United States of America gives to help a country that desperately needs it?” Trump asked in a post on the Truth Social platform.
He recognized that Ukraine’s survival is in the US interest. Last year, he avoided telling CNN directly whether he wanted Ukraine to win the war with Russia when asked about the outcome of the conflict.
“As everyone agrees, Ukraine’s strength and survival should be far more important to Europe than it is to us, but it is also important to us. Move, Europe!”, Trump underlined in his message.
He made this post the day after the meeting he had with Polish President Andrzej Duda in New York. During the meeting, Duda’s proposal that NATO members spend at least 3% of their GDP on defense was discussed, compared to the current target of 2%.
