As Al Jazeera reports, the expansion work of Al Maktoum International Airport has already started.

When the airport is completed, it will be the largest in the world.

The Prime Minister and Vice President of Dubai, Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, said on Sunday that the new airport will be five times larger than the current Dubai International Airport.

It will have five runways, 400 gates and with the capacity to serve up to 260 million passengers per year, according to what has been officially announced, it will undoubtedly be the busiest.

All operations of Dubai International Airport are to be transferred, gradually over the next few years, to Al Maktoum International Airport.

“Dubai will become the world’s airport, its port and the new global center”, emphasizes Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum.

Paul Griffiths, chief executive of Dubai Airports, said these moves are set to establish Dubai as a leading international aviation hub.
