London, Thanasis Gavos

The UK is facing its most dangerous security threat since the end of the Cold War due to the collusion of authoritarian states, Rishi Sunak will warn in a speech later in the day.

The British Prime Minister will say that his country is at a “crossroads” and must choose the best way to organize its defense in the face of changes in “every aspect of our lives” due to the challenges posed by countries such as China, Russia, the North Korea and Iran.

These countries, Mr. Sunak will say, constitute an “axis of authoritarian states”.

He will argue that his government and the Conservative Party are the ones who can provide that security. He will refer to the announcement to increase national defense spending to 2.5% of GDP, contrasting it with Labour’s refusal to commit to such a measure.

“More things will change in the next five years than (have changed) in the last 30. I am convinced that the coming years will be among the most dangerous, but also among the most transformative that our country will ever know,” he will say. Mr. Sunak.

He is expected to make special mention of some of the challenges facing the UK and the West, namely the war in Ukraine, the rise in global immigration, attempts to “undermine our shared values” and the misuse of the potential of artificial intelligence .
