The vice-president of the European Commission for the promotion of the European way of life, Margaritis Schinas, will ask for an explanation from the management of the EBU (European Broadcasting Union) for the banning of the EU flag during Eurovision
H European Commission and specifically the vice-president of the Commission for the promotion of the European way of life, Margaritis Schinashe will ask for explanations from her address EBU (European Broadcasting Union) for EU flag banduring her singing competition Eurovision.
The representative of the Commission, Eric Mamer, commented during today’s briefing that “it is very regrettable that they did not allow the display of the flag which is the flag of all EU members and other members of the Council of Europe participating in the competition and is often flown next to national flags on public buildings’. He emphasized that in the view of the Commission “there was absolutely no reason to ban this (EU) flag from the stadium” where the Eurovision song contest was taking place and added that this is something that will be pointed out the vice-president of the Commission, M. Schinas in his communication, today, with the management of the EBU. “We will encourage the EBU to understand that this was a mistake,” said Eric Mamer, expressing in this way the European Commission’s obvious irritation, especially a week before the telephone battle of the candidates of the European political parties for the Presidency of the Commission, which organized by the EBU on 23 May.
It is recalled that on the night of the Eurovision contest, the vice-president, M. Schinas, in a message to “X”, made an angry statement stating the following: “Eurovision is first of all a celebration of the European spirit, of European diversity and talents. The EU flag is a symbol of all of these. With less than a month to go before the European elections, there should be no obstacles, big or small, to celebrating what unites all Europeans.” In fact, in his statements to Politico, the Greek Commissioner emphasized that this decision only helped “the enemies of Europe” and announced that he would request clarifications from the EBU management. “I cannot find the logical explanation why the EBU is doing this. And what does that serve?’ said M. Schinas, adding: “less than a month from the European elections, who wins from the banning of the EU flag from Eurovision? Only the Eurosceptics and the enemies of Europe”.
