At 795.3 billion pounds, the wealth of the 350 richest people in Great Britain – The amount is greater than the GDP of Poland
Sir Paul McCartney has become the first British musician to become a billionaire according to the Sunday Times Rich List.
The former Beetle, now 81, boosted his fortune by £50m last year with his tours, Beyonce’s 1968 cover of Blackbird and the profits he continues to make from his previous songs, to lead him to this particular status.
Gopi Hinduja and his family have once again claimed the title of the UK’s richest people, with their fortune reaching £37.2 billion, the highest figure recorded by the Sunday Times.
Sir Elton John, Lord Lloyd Webber and David with Victoria Beckham are just some of the famous names on the list, which requires a minimum fortune of £350m.
This year’s list of the 350 richest people and families in Great Britain is valued at £795.3bn, which the Sunday Times says is bigger than the economy of Poland.
Nevertheless, Robert Watts, editor of the Sunday Times Rich List, said this year’s list suggested that “Britain’s billionaire boom is coming to an end.”
“Many of the domestic entrepreneurs are seeing their fortunes recede, while some of the global super-rich are leaving the country,” he explained. At the same time, he emphasized that “thousands of British households depend to some extent on the super-rich. We will have to wait and see if we have reached the maximum of billionaires and what this means for our economy,” he added.
As in the previous year, several “big” names faced financial setbacks which reduced their fortunes. For example, the difficulties faced by Virgin Money and space tourism company Galactic, Sir Richard Branson saw his fortune fall to £2.4 billion, the same as it was in 2000.
