The British Prime Minister, Boris Johnson, had a telephone conversation with the Ukrainian President, Zelensky, in the early morning hours, under the shadow of the Russian invasion.
According to a Downing Street statement, Mr. Johnson conveyed his disgust at what is unfolding in Ukraine.
President Zelensky informed him of the attacks, and the British Prime Minister replied that “the West will not remain inactive as President Putin conducts his campaign against the Ukrainian people.”
Mr Johnson also said he hoped Ukraine could resist and that the country and its people were on the minds of everyone in the UK at this “dark” time.
Mr Johnson is expected to make an emergency statement to the House of Commons following a meeting of the Cobra Emergency Response Committee and his participation in the G7 leaders’ teleconference.
British Foreign Secretary Liz Tras has condemned President Putin’s “disgusting and unprovoked” attack on the Ukrainian people. He added that Britain was on the side of Ukraine and would work with international partners to respond to this “terrible act of aggression”.
