The ground offensive launched by the Russian military in this border region, after escalating airstrikes, allowed it to record its most significant territorial gains since late 2022. The Russian advance has now stopped, Kiev says, and denies Moscow.
On Sunday, six people, including a pregnant woman, were killed, one was reported missing and 27 others were injured when an entertainment center in the region of Kharkiv, Ukraine’s second-largest city, was hit by rockets fired from neighboring Russian territory. Belgorod, Ukrainian officials said.
“Among the injured are a police officer and an ambulance driver who rushed to help people after the first attack,” the prosecutor’s office in Kharkiv explained, accusing the Russians of “once again” resorting to the deadly tactic of successive blows.
The same location was actually targeted 20 minutes after law enforcement and rescuers arrived, police said.
Russia has repeatedly been accused of carrying out double strikes, which consist of bombing one part first and then a second time when first aid services have arrived.
A short time later, five civilians were killed and nine wounded by multiple rocket launchers fired at the villages of Novoosinov and Kivsarivka, Kharkiv governor Oleh Sinekhubov said.
– “Terrorize the population” –
The Russian army seeks in this way to “terrorize” the population, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky reacted, asking for “two Patriots for Kharkiv”, American air defense systems that “will radically change the situation”.
Russian troops failed in 2022 to occupy the Kharkiv region. But very recently they opened a new front there with artillery fire and airstrikes, forcing thousands of people to flee their homes.
The enemy managed to advance five to ten kilometers along the northeastern border before being stopped by the Ukrainians, Zelensky assured Friday in an interview with Agence France-Presse.
