Invasion of Ukraine: Condemns Charles Michel and von der Layen – Very tough package of sanctions against Russia is coming

by

Unequivocal condemnation of the Russian invasion of Ukraine was the first reaction of the European leadership, a few hours after the multifaceted attack launched by Russia.

The President of the European Council, Charles Michel, and the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, in a joint statement to the press stated:

“We unequivocally condemn Russia’s unprecedented military offensive against Ukraine. By its unprovoked and unjustified military actions, Russia is blatantly violating international law and undermining European and global security and stability. We express our sorrow for the loss of human lives and human suffering.

We call on Russia to immediately cease hostilities, withdraw its troops from Ukraine and fully respect Ukraine’s territorial integrity, sovereignty and independence. The use of force and coercion of this kind has no place in the 21st century. The EU stands firmly on the side of Ukraine and its people as they face this unprecedented crisis.

EU leaders will meet later today. The President of the European Council, Mr Michel, convened an emergency meeting of the European Council to discuss the crisis and further restrictive measures. These measures will have huge and far-reaching consequences for Russia because of its actions. President von der Leyen and High Representative Borrell will present a further package of sanctions to be finalized by the European Commission and the EEAS in close coordination with partners. The Council will approve them immediately.

“The EU will continue to provide strong political, economic and humanitarian assistance to Ukraine and its people.”
