The leader of the outgoing ruling Social Democratic Party (SDSM) Dimitar Kovačevski submitted his resignation this afternoon, taking responsibility for the party’s heavy defeat in the parliamentary elections held in North Macedonia on 8 May.

Kovacevsky, in his letter of resignation to the members of the party bodies he also requests the convening of an extraordinary congress of the SDSM and the holding of internal party elections to elect a new president of the party.

The SDSM in the May 8 parliamentary elections came third in seats, securing only 18 of the 120 seats in the Parliament, compared to 58 secured by the opposition VMRO-DPMNE and 19 by the co-governing Albanian party of origin, DUI.

Furthermore, in the second round of the presidential elections held at the same time as the parliamentary elections, the SDSM candidate and former president of North Macedonia, Stevo Pendarovski, was clearly defeated by the VMRO-DPMNE candidate and new president of the country, Gordana Silanovska.

Kovacevski served as prime minister of North Macedonia and leader of the SDSM from early 2022 to early 2024, replacing Zoran Zaev in both positions.
