“The main criterion by which we will judge and support the progress of these countries is the condition of our countrymen in each country”
The president Rumen Radev today Monday awarded the Stara Planina medal to Ivan Nikolov, founder and president of the Cultural Information Center of the Bulgarian National Minority of Bosilegrad, during a ceremony in Sofia. Nikolov was honored for his outstanding services to the Republic of Bulgaria in connection with the consistent and unwavering protection of the rights, national identity and dignity of Bulgarians in the Republic of Serbia.
“Bulgaria is the driving force of the European integration of the Western Balkan countries, because we know how important this integration is for the security, stability and sustainable economic development of the region, but we stand firm on the principle of our own virtues in this integration process so that it is sustainable and irreversible,” Radeff said.
“The main criterion by which we will judge and support the progress of these countries is the situation of our countrymen in every country, the conditions of their economic and social development, and above all their ability to defend their national identity, language, culture and historical memory”, he underlined.
“I will continue to be personally committed, as will Vice President Iliana Yotova, to ensure that Bulgarian institutions actively work for a unified and clear national Bulgarian position and policy in support of all our compatriots abroad. I will continue to work actively with leadership of the Serbian state to solve the problems of our compatriots in the western outskirts,” Radev emphasized.
Ivan Nikolov is here and long time representative of the Bulgarian minority in Serbia. In 1990 he was instrumental in establishing the Democratic Union of Bulgarians in Yugoslavia, serving as its secretary and press representative. Since 1997, he is the founder and president of the Cultural Information Center of the Bulgarian National Minority of Bosilegrad. With his tireless work from the early 1990s until today, Nikolov has become the most official representative of the Bulgarian ethnic minority in Serbia, Radev said. “As a prominent public figure, writer, researcher, human rights activist, he has played an important role in preserving the Bulgarian national identity, language, culture, historical memory of our compatriots in Serbia, as well as strengthening their national consciousness and dignity,” he added.
