The mayor of the city of Nuseirat, in the central Gaza Strip, was killed late Thursday night by an Israeli strike, along with four other people, the hospital where the dead were taken said today.

Iyad al-Maghari was at the city’s water station when that infrastructure was hit “around 10:30 p.m.” on Thursday night, said Mohammad al-Salhi, the spokesman for Al-Aqsa Hospital in Deir al-Balakh, a little further south. Four members of his family were killed along with him.

The Israeli military, after being repeatedly asked by AFP about this strike, said this afternoon that it would “soon” issue a statement.

In the morning, a prayer was held outside the hospital and then the mayor’s body was taken by ambulance to Nuseirat for burial.

The Nuseirat municipality and Hamas’ press office in Gaza separately announced Magari’s death, blaming the Israeli military.

“We heard a lot of explosions,” said a resident of Nuseirat, Ibrahim al-Hu. AFP journalists also found that the water station was damaged by the attack.
