The police said in a statement that from the first investigations the incident is not connected to political motives
The 39-year-old man, who is suspected of attacking Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen last night, may have acted without a political motive and has been remanded in custody for 12 days, from today until June 20.
“Distraught” Mette Frederiksen has canceled her engagements for today and has suffered a “slight neck sprain” after being attacked in a Copenhagen square, her services have revealed.
“Our working hypothesis at this time is that the incident is not politically motivated“, police said in X, after the suspect was brought before a judge, who remanded him in custody until June 20.
The suspect, aged 39, was mumbling and looking lost at the time of his arrest, prosecutors said during the hearing, Danish media reported.
He appeared to be intoxicated, according to a medical report cited by the prosecutor. According to the indictment, he punched the prime minister’s right hand.
Two eyewitnesses told the Danish newspaper BT that they saw Mete Frederiksen arrive in the square while they were sitting near a fountain shortly before 18:00 local time (19:00 Greek time).
“A man came from the opposite direction and pushed her hard on the shoulder, which caused her to lose her balance,” but without falling, according to the witnesses.
Although it was a “strong push”, Frederiksen did not fall to the ground, they clarified.
They described the alleged attacker as a tall and thin man and added that he tried to run away but was unable to get away before he was tackled by men in suits.
