The International Auschwitz Committee has expressed its shock at the strong performance of far-right parties in the European elections.

“For survivors of the Holocaust and German concentration and extermination camps, this election result is a disappointing turning point,” International Auschwitz Committee Executive Vice President Christoph Huebner said in a statement released today.

“Europe is losing and forgetting itself: in more and more countries, nationalist and far-right parties are gaining influence, while in fact they abhor the European idea, which grew out of the horrors of the Second World War and the murderous horrors of the camps.”

However, Europe remains the great hope for Holocaust survivors, Heubner emphasized.

“And that is precisely why they urgently call on the other parties in the European Parliament to protect this European idea and to stand together against the unrest and incitement by right-wing extremist forces,” he added.
