As the humanitarian situation in Afghanistan worsens, the European Union has announced that it is providing tens of millions of euros to organizations operating in the country.
Around 125 million euros will be allocated to aid organizations working in Afghanistan to prevent the risk of famine, the European Commission announced yesterday in Brussels.
The amount will be used primarily to provide food, shelter, health care, drinking water and access to basic services, especially sewage systems.
According to the press release, another 11 million euros will be allocated to Pakistan, to offer assistance to Afghan refugees and to prepare for natural disasters.
While around 10 million euros are earmarked for humanitarian organizations in Iran that also take care of Afghan refugees.
The European Commission’s humanitarian aid to Afghanistan is estimated at €1.8 billion since 1994. In 2023, almost €160 million has been disbursed.
The situation in Afghanistan is one of the most serious humanitarian crises in the world. According to the Commission, almost 24 million people depend on humanitarian aid. Over 15 million people face acute food insecurity.
