The Russian media regulator today ordered the national media to delete from its content any reference to civilians killed by the Russian army in Ukraine, as well as the terms “invasion”, “attack” or “declaration of war”.
“We emphasize that only official Russian sources have factual and reliable information,” Roskomnadzor said in a statement, as Moscow formally called its intervention in Ukraine a “special military operation” aimed at “maintaining peace.”
This ‘call for compliance’ is addressed to a number of media outlets, most of which are critical of the Russian government, such as the Novaya Gazeta newspaper, whose director was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2021, the Dodj online channel or the Mediazona website. , who have already been described as “foreign agents” in Russia.
According to the regulator, these media outlets reportedly spread false information that “Russian forces are firing on Ukrainian cities.” He also blames them for content “where the operation is characterized as an attack, invasion or declaration of war”.
If they refuse to delete this content, “access to these media will be blocked,” warns Roskomnadzor, which also cites heavy fines.
