Norway announced today that it is increasing its aid to the UN agency for Palestine refugees (Unrwa) by 100 million kroner (8.7 million euros).

Unrwa, which coordinates virtually all aid destined for Gaza, has been weakened by Israeli accusations that 12 of its 13,000 workers were involved in the October 7 Hamas attack. The Israeli accusations led to the suspension of funding by some major donor countries, such as the US, but some have resumed providing aid.

“Unrwa is the backbone of humanitarian aid in Gaza,” Ann Beate Kristiansen Twinerheim, Norway’s minister for international development, said in a statement.

“The war, Israel’s accusations, incessant attacks on its organizations and the withholding of funds from key donors have put UNRWA in an extremely difficult financial situation,” he added.

The 100 million kroner comes in addition to the 275 million kroner given in February by Norway to the UN agency, the ministry said, adding that nearly 200 of the agency’s workers have been killed since the start of the war in Gaza.
