“There is nothing for the Houthis to gain by continuing to hold the 25 crew members captive,” the management company underlines.
The management company of the cargo ship Galaxy Leader today issued a new appeal for the release of the 25 crew members who have been held for seven months by the Houthis.
On November 19, Houthi helicopters approached the Galaxy Leader and gunmen seized the Bahamian-flagged ship, capturing the crew members (two Bulgarians, one Romanian, three Ukrainians, two Mexicans and 17 Filipinos).
Galaxy Leader is operated by a Japanese shipping company.
The ship-owning company is British, with Israeli interests.
“There is nothing for the Houthis to gain by continuing to hold the 25 crew members captive“, underlines the management company, asking that they be released and return to their families without further delay.
Since last November, Iran-aligned Yemeni rebels have frequently launched missile and drone attacks against merchant ships in the Red Sea, Gulf of Aden and the Indian Ocean. They initially said they were targeting ships linked to Israel, but later expanded their targets to include ships linked to the US and Britain in retaliation for strikes against their positions in Yemen by forces from those countries.
Houthi attacks in the region have caused problems for global shipping, forcing companies to send their ships on time-consuming and more expensive voyages around southern Africa.
