The US armed forces announced that yesterday Tuesday they destroyed nine drones of the Houthi rebels of Yemen.

As the joint command of the US armed forces responsible for the Middle East (CENTCOM, “central command”) clarified via X, the eight unmanned aerial systems (UAS) were destroyed in an area controlled by the Houthis in Yemeni territory and unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) “over the Gulf of Aden” because they were deemed to “pose an immediate threat”.

The Houthis, who control much of the country, have since November launched attacks on ships in the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden, maritime areas critical to global trade, saying they were acting in “solidarity” with Palestinians in the Gaza Strip. , an enclave besieged by Israel, at war with Hamas since October 7.

Their actions skyrocketed the cost of insuring ships crossing the Red Sea and forced shipping companies to send their ships around Africa, a much more time-consuming route.

The US and Britain have been bombing Yemen since January to reduce the capabilities of the Houthis, allies of Iran.
