The Prime Minister of Rhineland-Palatinate Malu Dreyer (SPD) announced her resignation today, after eleven years in the post. It is estimated that the parliament of the state will elect as her successor on July 10 the until now minister of social affairs of the state, Alexander Schweitzer.

Ms Dreyer has been hugely popular in previous years, but her image took a heavy hit after the deadly floods in her area in 2021. At the time, the Home Secretary in her Roger Levens government resigned, but she has never publicly apologized to the citizens. Now, he is stepping down a year and a half before the next state election.

In a press conference she gave earlier today, 63-year-old Malou Dreyer, who has for years publicized that she suffers from multiple sclerosis, said that her strength is now limited, although she clarified that she is not tired of her work. “My batteries don’t charge as fast anymore. I had to realize now that my strength is running out and that the state deserves someone else, with a lot of strength, to take over the position,” he added.
