President Macron’s sudden decision to call early parliamentary elections in France led to a spectacular decrease in the number of parliamentary candidates.

As announced by the French Ministry of the Interior, the 577 seats of the French National Assembly will be claimed by 4011 candidates, compared to 6290 who were in 2022 and 7877 who applied in 2017.

This decrease is mainly due to the fact that many small parties and individual candidates, due to lack of time, decided not to participate in the elections, as well as to the fact that due to all kinds of electoral partnerships, in the 577 single-seat regions of France, the total number decreased of the parliamentary candidates of the parties participating in the elections. According to calculations by the newspaper Le Monde, around 1,000 are, in general, the candidates who are placed in the central area, where the faction of President Macron is also located.

Over 1000 are the candidates who are placed in the field of the left, where the dominant force is the new Popular Front, while just under 1000 are those who are placed in the field of the right, where the dominant force is the far-right party of Marine Le Pen. The rest of the candidates belong either to local parties, such as e.g. of Corsica, whether they are of specialized interest, such as Hunters, or animal lovers
