British Foreign Secretary Liz Tras has said no talks can be held with Russia to resolve the crisis in Ukraine as long as Russian troops are on Ukrainian soil.
“If the Russians are serious about negotiations, they should withdraw their troops from Ukraine. They can not negotiate with the pistol in the temple of Ukrainians. “So, honestly, I do not trust these so-called negotiation efforts,” Ms Trass told Sky News in a morning interview.
Regarding the situation on the front, he said that the Ukrainian forces continue to show brave resistance so that the situation on the ground has not changed significantly overnight.
He said that for the Russians this resistance was unexpected, while noting that the role of Britain is to continue to provide defensive weapons and financial support to this resistance.
He warned, however, that it would be a protracted conflict that could last “for a number of years” as Russia prevails in firepower, but the Ukrainians “are brave and determined to fight.”
He commented that he would fully support any British citizens who decided to go to war on the side of the Ukrainians, as they are fighting for democracy throughout Europe.
He also said that this war, despite all the warnings, could be “the beginning of the end for Putin”, noting that the International Criminal Court is already considering the commission of possible war crimes. “There will be serious consequences for him personally and for the Russian government,” she added.
He also warned, however, that the war could be “very bloody”, saying “we have already seen Russian attacks on civilians.” He also said that “we must be prepared for Russia to use even worse weapons.”
He reiterated that President Putin had made a major “strategic mistake”, referring to reactions such as President Zelensky’s courageous leadership, international isolation and heavy Western sanctions, such as Russia’s exclusion from the SWIFT system. He commented that the blow to the Russian economy is already visible, although it will take time for sanctions to weaken it. As he said, the West must be weaned from Russian oil and gas.
She announced further and stricter sanctions, while in an article in the Times she stated that an attempt is being made to substantiate the relations of Russian oligarchs with the Kremlin, in order to include in the list of sanctions their property, their private planes, etc.
