The British nurse Lucy Letbywho has already been sentenced to life in prison for the murder of seven newbornswas found guilty today, Tuesday, of attempting to kill a little girl at the hospital where she worked.

At the end of the month-long trial at Manchester Crown Court, jurors quickly came to the conclusion that Letby, 34, attempted to kill ‘Baby K’, a premature infant in the intensive care unit of the Countess of Chester Hospital, on February 2016.

Her sentence in that case will be announced on Friday.

In August 2023 Letby was found guilty of seven murders of premature babies at the same hospital in 2015-16. The number of children she killed or attempted to kill makes her the worst serial killer of minors in modern British history. In that trial, however, jurors had not reached a verdict in the case of “Baby K” and five other infants.

According to prosecutor Nicola Wyne Williams, a doctor saw the newborn, less than two hours after being born, struggling to breathe, with Letby by his side who “did nothing to help him or call for help”. Williams argued that the nurse intentionally removed the oxygen device to kill the baby and did not raise the alarm to alert her colleagues that the infant was in danger.

“Baby K” was transferred the next day to another hospital and died three days later, but the prosecutor had not brought a manslaughter charge against Letby. The latter, whose motive has never been clarified, insists she is innocent and as for “Baby K” she told the court she did not remember that particular night.
