Gometh has not commented publicly on the case. Sanchez has repeatedly and vehemently denied the allegations
Begonia Gomet, the wife of Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez, appeared in a Madrid court today to answer questions about allegations of corruption and undue influence in a case that had prompted her husband to consider resigning in April.
Today’s hearing is part of a preliminary investigation into whether Gomet used her position as the prime minister’s wife to influence her business deals, the court had announced before the hearing.
Neither Gometh nor her lawyer addressed reporters gathered outside the courthouse before her closed-door appearance before the judge, who ordered the hearing adjourned minutes after it began and set new dates for July 19.
Gomet has not commented publicly on the case, but Sanchez has repeatedly and vehemently denied the accusations against his wife, saying they are baseless and orchestrated by right-wing political opponents.
The case reached the courts through a Spanish legal tool, the so-called “popular class”, which allows private individuals to bring criminal proceedings against third parties. Judges can choose whether or not to proceed, and not all charges lead to a judicial investigation.
The lawsuit against Gometh has been filed by Manos Limpias (Clean Hands), an anti-corruption activist organization led by Miguel Bernard, a lawyer and politician who ran for the European Parliament with a far-right party.
Manos Limpias accuses Gometh of using her influence to secure sponsors for a university master’s degree she ran.
The ongoing investigation seeks to assess Gomet’s conduct after Sanchez became prime minister in 2018, the court said. Contracts related to European Union funds will be checked separately by the European Prosecutor.
In late April, Sanchez said he would suspend his duties for five days to consider resigning after the court announced the opening of an investigation into his wife. He later declared that he would remain in the prime ministership.
