A spokesman for German diplomacy described Mr. Orban’s visits to Moscow and Beijing as “unilateral” moves that “we observe with astonishment and skepticism.”
Germany’s foreign ministry said yesterday that since Hungary took over the rotating presidency of the European Union on July 1, the government of right-wing nationalist Prime Minister Viktor Orban has done “great damage”.
A spokesman for German diplomacy described Mr. Orban’s visits to Moscow and Beijing as “unilateral” moves that “we observe with astonishment and skepticism.”
He insisted that the Hungarian prime minister, who also visited Kiev and — after the NATO summit in Washington — Miami for talks with former US president Donald Trump, was taking these initiatives personally, not representing the EU.
Regarding the potential impact of Mr. Orban’s travels, he added that “we will have to see how the Hungarian presidency will continue (…) We are on day 12 and already a lot of damage has been done.”
Germany’s deputy government spokesman Wolfgang Buschner said the Hungarian prime minister can travel wherever he wants, but “what cannot be accepted is (…) him creating the impression that he is doing so on behalf of others. And there will certainly be further discussion about how we deal with this.”
Mr Orban presented his trips to Moscow and Beijing as part of a “peace” initiative for Ukraine, as did the one in Miami.
