The moment of truth is approaching for Ursula von der Leyen as on Thursday, July 18, the secret vote of the European Parliament will be held that will decide whether she will remain at the helm of the Commission for a second term.

Processes and negotiations are ongoing in order for Ursula von der Leyen to secure the 361 votes out of a total of 720 MEPs she needs to be elected.

It is noted that von der Leyen was elected in 2019 with the votes of her European People’s Partythe Socialists and the liberals.

Together the three centrist groups could give her a majority of around 50 MEPs, but only if all MEPs vote for her in the secret ballot, but she is expected to suffer losses.

At the same time, its ECR Georgia Meloni invited his MEPs to vote as they wish and it is estimated that von der Leyen will receive some votes from there, as well as from the Greens.

The agreement reached by the leaders of the European Council for its presidency Commission it also includes Antonio Kotsa as president of the Council and Kaya Kalas as High Representative. As long as Ursula von der Leyen is not elected, the agreement ceases to be valid for the other persons as well.
