Coast Guard downplays extent of spill – Oil recovery vessel heads to wreck site
Part of the 1.4 million liter cargo of industrial fuel carried by the oil tanker MT Terra Nova – which sank on Thursday at a depth of 34 meters off Manila – has started leaking into the sea, the Philippine Coast Guard said today, downgrading it to stage the extent of the leak.

Divers inspecting the ship’s hull found “minimal leakage” from the valves, coast guard spokesman Rear Admiral Armando Balilo said, adding that the situation was “not alarming” at the moment.
A little earlier the coast guard had announced that it wanted to prevent “environmental disaster” by recovering the fuel the tanker was carrying as soon as possible.

A ship capable of transporting the recovered oil is heading to the wreck site, Balilo said.
The company tasked with removing the cargo of oil and transferring it to another vessel has been instructed to start work tomorrow, Sunday, “if possible”.
According to the authorities, this operation can last seven days.
