24-hour delay Hezbollah confirms death of top commander – No longer a threat Israel says Fuad Shukr
The body of Hezbollah’s top commander, Fuad Shukr, was found in the rubble of the building in the southern suburbs of the Lebanese capital that Israel bombed on Tuesday, two sources close to the security services told Reuters.
The Israeli military announced late Tuesday that it had “killed” Shukr, whom it believed was responsible for the weekend attack that killed 12 children in the Golan Heights. Hezbollah denied any involvement in the attack.
Earlier today in a post on X the Greek Embassy of Israel in Greece said: “Fuad Shukr, the top military commander of #Hezbollah was responsible for the 1983 attack in #Lebanon that killed 241 US Marines. He was also behind the attack with rocket that killed 12 children in #MajdalShams (northern Israel). No longer a threat.”
Hezbollah confirms
Hezbollah, which is backed financially and militarily by Iran, took 24 hours to confirm Fuad Shukr’s death, according to Fance24 (although it had said earlier this morning that its top leader was in the building where the Israeli attack took place in Beirut).
Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant said that Shukr “he had the blood of many Israelis on his hands. Today we showed that the blood of our people has a price and that there is no place that our forces cannot reach for this purpose.”
O Shukr was an adviser to Hezbollah leader Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah, according to Hezbollah sources and an Israeli military statement. Reuters reports that he is its highest-ranking commander to die in the nearly 10-month exchange of fire between Israel and Hezbollah, which is taking place alongside the war in Gaza.
