“Death to Israel!” Hundreds of people attended today at the funerals of two children who were killed in the Israeli bombardment yesterday against a senior Hezbollah official on the southern outskirts of Beirut.

The Israeli military announced last night that it had “killed” the commander of the powerful pro-Iranian group Fouad Shukr, in this strike on the Hezbollah stronghold.

The strike on a building in this densely populated district also killed four civilians, two women and two children, Amira Fadlallah, aged 6, and her brother Hassan, aged 10, who were at their aunt’s house.

“Israel is the enemy of Muslims”, “America is Satan”, chanted the crowd gathered today, during the funeral.

“I am of course outraged because (…) the lives of our children are not worth much,” said 38-year-old Aya Ahmad, a friend of the mother of the two children, who attended the funerals.

“The two children we lost are added to the list of 17,000 children who have been killed in Gaza without anyone demanding justice for them,” she told AFP.

Hezbollah confirmed that Fouad Shukr, a senior military commander, was in the building that was targeted.

The Israeli army holds him responsible for the death last Saturday of 12 youths when a rocket was fired into the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights. Hezbollah denies any involvement.

It is the second time the southern outskirts have been targeted since Hezbollah opened the front against Israel on October 8 in support of the Palestinian Hamas in Gaza.

On January 2nd, Hamas second-in-command Saleh al-Aruri was killed in this Shiite quarter, in a strike attributed to Israel.
