International pressure is mounting to produce evidence of the controversial re-election of the head of state
The State Department’s top official for Latin American affairs, Brian Nicholsclaimed yesterday Wednesday that the opposition candidate in VenezuelaEdmundo González Urrutia, beat the outgoing president “clearly”. Nicolas Maduro in Sunday’s election, as international pressure mounts to produce evidence of the disputed re-election of the head of state.
The Undersecretary of State responsible for Western Hemisphere Affairs added, during his speech at a meeting of the Organization of American States (OAS), that the difference was “millions” of votes and proves the “undeniable” dominance of Mr. Gonzalez Urrutia, citing numbers presented by the opposition.
Given “this count, the reason they refuse to release full results is obvious,” Mr Nicholls insisted.
Venezuela’s National Electoral Council (CNE) announced Monday that President Nicolas Maduro has been re-elected to a third term in office. The opposition, however, denounced “massive fraud” and countered that its own candidate, Mr. Gonzalez Urrutia, prevailed with “73%” of the votes. According to the official results of the CNE, Mr. Maduro received 51.2% of the vote, while his opponent received 44.2%.
