In a 1980 interview, 34-year-old Donald Trump was asked if he would ever consider running for president of the United States.

The rather camera-shy Trump, who appears to be no relation to today’s Trump, replied that he had no plans to enter politics at the time.

He expressed concern about the state of the US and the direction it was heading at the time.

“I would like to see someone as president who will do the job and there are a lot of capable people in the country… It is very bad for the country that not a lot of capable people are running. I’d love to spend my life in this country, but it’s a hard life…someone who might be telling unpopular truths wouldn’t necessarily get elected if he faced somebody not with a lot of brains, but with a big smile.”
