OR Kamala Harris has no intention of proceeding with enforcement arms embargo at Israela close aide of the Democratic candidate for the presidency of the United States assured yesterday Thursday, referring—rarely—to her program regarding the Middle East.

“She is not in favor of an arms embargo on Israel,” said Phil Gordon, her national security adviser. According to him, the American vice president has made it “clear” that she will make sure Israel “is able to defend itself against Iran and the terrorist organizations supported by Iran.”

Some in the US press see impressive momentum in Ms Harris’s campaign so far; however, the Democratic candidate was booed by Palestinian supporters during a campaign speech last Wednesday.

Such incidents were frequent at Joe Biden’s appearances before the US president, 81, finally announced he was abandoning his re-election campaign amid questions about his health and mental acuity.

The US is by far Israel’s largest supplier of military hardware, but this has divided the Democratic caucus, especially since the devastating war broke out in the Gaza Strip, where the Israeli armed forces were ordered to wipe out Hamas after its military arm attacked. Ms Harris faced anti-war protesters in Michigan, a key state she needs to win on November 5 when she faces Republican former President Donald Trump. The state has a large population originating from Arab states.

Part of the Democratic left wing, denouncing the humanitarian disaster in Gaza and Israel’s occupation of Palestinian territories, is pushing for a review of American policy on the thorny issue.

In Detroit, Kamala Harris was interrupted by pro-Palestinian activists chanting “we will not vote for genocide.” The candidate sharply countered: “If you want Donald Trump to win, keep saying that. If not, I’m talking.”

After her meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu a few days ago, Ms. Harris promised that she would not be “silent” about the “tragedies” in Gaza, a Palestinian enclave under siege and relentless Israeli bombardment for ten months.

During the Biden presidency, the White House has only suspended one delivery of high-powered bombs to Israel, due to “concerns” that they would be used in the densely populated enclave, making the civilian death toll even heavier.
