Belgrade finally condemns Russian invasion of Ukraine – But does not impose sanctions

by

Serbia has voted in favor of condemning the Russian invasion of Ukraine at a UN General Assembly, Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic has announced.

This is a partial revision of Serbia’s stance, as Belgrade has so far avoided condemning the invasion of Ukraine by Russian forces, citing the principle of neutrality and national interests.

President Aleksandar Vuτςiτς stated in a press conference that his support for the UN resolution does not mean a change in his stance on sanctions against Russia. Serbia refuses to impose sanctions on Russia despite pressure from the European Union and the United States. The Serbian president expressed fears that the rapid changes in the international political environment that would follow would create an unfavorable climate for the defense of Serbian national interests. He did not rule out the possibility of Russia’s expulsion from the UN Security Council, which he said would pave the way for the repeal of Resolution 1244 of 1999, which designates Kosovo as an integral part of Serbia. “Without the Russian veto, the 1999 resolution will be repealed, Serbia will lose its legal right to defend its territorial integrity, and Kosovo will be recognized as an independent state by all five EU countries that do not recognize it today,” he said. Vuτςiτς.

The President of Serbia expressed his dissatisfaction with the statement of the Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdo .an that he will help Kosovo to join NATO. Vuτςiτς described Turkey’s stance as unfriendly and announced a note of protest from the Serbian Foreign Ministry.
