Controversial reactions were caused by the cooperation of the Cypriot MEP with a Turkish Cypriot influencer
Reactions were caused by a joint video made by the MEP Phidias Panagiotou with the Turkish Cypriot influencer Urban Cypriot on the anniversary of the second phase of the Turkish invasion of Cyprus.
Specifically, they made one video in which they are at the Ledra roadblock and report that both sides have taught them to hate each other, while for his part Mr. Panagiotou noted that the world is changing rapidly, however Cyprus has been stuck for years with this particular problem.
“The last divided country in Europe is Cyprus. I am Phidias, the most famous Greek Cypriot on social media. And I am Urban Cypriot, the most famous Turkish Cypriot on social media” they begin their message.
“It has been 60 years since the United Nations forces first came to Cyprus to stop our killing each other.“, they continue.
“I was taught to hate you“
It has been 50 years since the Turkish army occupied 38% of the island. It is such a small island and yet we have to show our passports to cross to the other side. On the north side I have been taught to hate that man (with the Urban Cypriot pointing to Pheidias) and on this side, I have been taught half the story and I have been taught to hate you too (said Pheidias).

This post caused a variety of reactions and comments.
Many people even remembered that today (14/8/24) when the specific video was uploaded, is the day that in 1996 Solomos Solomou was murdered by a Turkish settler minister of the pseudo-state, on the day of the funeral of Tasos Isaac’s murdered cousin in Cyprus, a commemoration day of the capture of Famagusta.
Still others criticized his move.
