Netanyahu calls for Israeli military forces to remain along land corridor between Egypt and Gaza
US President Joe Biden is expected to have a phone call with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu today, which will focus on a new demand by the Israeli head of government that the Israeli military forces it has deployed along the land corridor between of Egypt and Gaza, Axios reported, citing an unnamed source.
The US president wants Netanyahu to soften the Israeli position on the issue, Axios wrote.
In talks to end hostilities, Hamas is seeking the full withdrawal of Israeli forces from Gaza, including from the so-called Philadelphia Corridor, a narrow 14.5km strip of land that runs along the coastal border in the southern part of enclave with Egypt.
Israel wants to retain control of the strip, which it seized in late May after destroying dozens of tunnels under it that it says were used to smuggle weapons to Gaza’s armed groups.
