Neither French President Emmanuel Macron nor the country’s foreign ministry had been warned before the arrest of Telegram founder Pavel Durov, Reuters reported, citing a Paris prosecutor’s source.

Durov was also unaware of the arrest warrant awaiting him in France, according to the source.

The source clarified that the French investigation not associated with the United States.

Earlier, Le Monde newspaper reported, citing people close to the French president, that Macron did not plan to meet with Durov at the Elysee Palace on the day of his arrival, contrary to some media reports. According to the newspaper, Macron was not in Paris that night but at his family home in Pas-de-Calais in northern France and was not even aware about Durov’s trip to France.

The Russian was arrested at Le Bourget airport outside Paris on August 24. His detention ended on August 28 and a judicial investigator charged him with six charges, including aiding and abetting the operation of a platform that enables illegal transactions. The offense, according to an announcement by the Paris prosecutor’s office, is punishable by up to 10 years in prison and a fine of 500,000 euros.
