Tourist killed, man missing after severe storm hits Mallorca
A British woman hiking in Majorca has been found dead and a man is missing after torrential rain hit the island earlier this week, emergency services said today.
The two hikers had been missing since Monday night. They had gone to a mountainous area, on the north side of Majorca, where the Torrent de Pares canyon is located, which ends in the Mediterranean.
Rescue services reported via Platform X that the woman was found dead. “The militia and the fire department are continuing the search for the second missing person.”
Juan Carlos Rodriguez, the head of the Balearic Militia’s mountain operations team, said ten other hikers who had set out to cross the canyon were rescued. “They told us they saw two people being swept away by the storm,” he told reporters, noting that some of the rescued were wearing only “sneakers and shorts” when the storm hit.
The search for the missing person, which had been suspended due to bad weather conditions, resumed this afternoon.
The Balearic authorities had issued a warning of “severe storms” in the area and asked tourists and residents to avoid outdoor activities such as water sports and hiking.
