The deadly hurricane left behind 16 dead and extensive damage, with new president Claudia Sheinbaum “sounding” the alarm
Its new president Mexico Claudia Sheinbaum yesterday Wednesday expressed concern about the supply of drinking water to residents in the western part of the country after the passage of hurricane johnwhich left behind 16 dead and extensive damage to the country’s Pacific coast.
“The most urgent thing is the supply of drinking water and the cleaning of the streets,” said the president, who was sworn in and assumed office yesterday Tuesday, during her first official visit to the touristic Acapulco (southwest), the once unofficial capital of international jet set, which had already suffered major damage on October 25, 2023, when it was hit by Hurricane Otis.
Ms. Sheinbaum traveled to the city, accompanied by part of her government, to support the “emergency response” and to guarantee that the “immediate needs” of citizens will be met, she said via X.
Once she arrived, she overheard a resident telling her from inside the car that she was being transported that she had already lost her shop when Hurricane Otis hit in 2023, an AFP correspondent found.
The new president also warned residents that a tropical storm is approaching, which is expected to arrive over land “in the next 24 hours”, bringing new heavy rains to the coasts of the states of Oaxaca and Guerrero.
“We ask residents to stay away from rivers, go to areas with higher altitude, move closer to reception centers and follow the instructions of the authorities,” he said.
