Swedish police have refused to confirm reports of a settlement of accounts in a country struggling to crack down on gang violence.
A shop assistant was injured in a gunman’s attack at a shopping center in the western Swedish city of Kungsbaka on Sunday, and a juvenile was arrested as a suspect, according to police and local media.
Swedish police have refused to confirm reports of a settlement of accounts in a country struggling to crack down on violence between drug-trafficking gangs.
“We can confirm that one of our employees was shot and injured at the Kungsmässan shopping center in Kungsbäcka,” 30 kilometers south of Gothenburg, a company spokesman said.
According to the Aftonbladet newspaper report, the arrested person is a teenager under the age of 15.
“It shows deep recklessness that shots were fired, on a Sunday afternoon, in an area with employees and visitors of a shopping center,” Justice Minister Gunnar Strömer told state television SVT.
In 2023, the Swedish police recorded 363 shooting incidents that claimed the lives of 53 people. Most of these are attributed to gangs.
