The EU High Representative said that “without political reform within Lebanese society, led by the Lebanese people, you cannot do anything.”
History has shown that a military solution does not work when there is a “deep-rooted problem in a region like the Middle East” and especially when “weak institutions exist” in a country, stressed EU High Representative Josep Borrell, speaking to the plenary. of the European Parliament in Strasbourg on the situation in Lebanon and the wider region.
As he pointed out, Lebanon is a very unstable country, because “within the state there is another state, which is Hezbollah, which is a puppet of Iran.”
Josep Borrell noted that Hezbollah has a political arm, it has members in the Lebanese government, it has members who are members of parliament, but it also has a military arm, “which we classify as a terrorist organization.”
He clarified that there is no contact with this department, but with the politician who has members in the Lebanese parliament. At the same time, the high representative mentioned that the situation in Lebanon is getting worse day by day.
“Without a strong compromise, without political reform, within the Lebanese society led by the Lebanese people and actors, without all these, nothing can happen. No one can replace them and do for them what needs to be done,” he added.
Josep Borrell also mentioned that the Commission has promised to provide one billion euros for the reconstruction of Lebanon, however according to him a specific timetable should be given when such commitments exist.
