In anticipation of retaliation, U.S. officials who spoke to NBC say Israel has limited its targets and will not strike nuclear facilities.
US officials say Israel has narrowed down potential targets for its response to Iran’s recent missile attack and is expected to target what they describe as Iranian military and energy infrastructure.
In particular, speaking to NBC they said that there is no indication that Israel will be targeted nuclear facilities or will carry out assassinations. They emphasized, however, that they have not made a final decision on how and when they will act.
Iran, as well as the entire region, is nervously awaiting Israeli retaliation after the Iranian missile attack that took place on October 1.
The USA they do not know when Israel’s answer will come, but officials said the Israeli army is ready at any time once the order is given.
US officials have admitted that Israel has not shared a specific timetable with them – and it is not clear that Israeli officials have yet agreed. But US and Israeli officials say the answer could come during the Yom Kippur holiday.
Israel has shared more information with the US about the retaliation, the officials said, but they have withheld many details because of concerns about possible leaks about the operation.
At the same time, US officials continued to urge the Israeli government to respond “in proportion”, sticking to military targets and avoiding oil, gas and nuclear facilities.
It is recalled that American President Joe Biden and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu had a telephone conversation last Wednesday after a long time. Biden strongly urged Netanyahu to focus on the humanitarian situation in Gaza and Lebanon and asked him to end the fighting.
