U.S.A. scientists have named US President Biden a ten-tenth cephalopod that lived about 328 million years ago at sea and is the ancestor of the octopus.
It is the oldest “vampire foot” ever discovered, 82 million years older than the relevant fossils so far.
Vampires belong to the cephalopods, which include octopuses and “vampire” squid.
The paleontologists of the American Museum of Natural History and the Department of Geosciences at Yale University, led by Dr. Christopher Wallen, who published the journal in the journal Nature Communications, named the animal Syllipsimopodi bideni. “It’s the oldest ancestor of octopuses and all octopus-related creatures, yet it looks a lot like a squid,” said Dr. Wallen.
The well-preserved torpedo-shaped fossil was discovered in Montana, USA and donated to the Royal Ontario Museum in Canada in 1988, but has only just been studied.
It is 12 cm long and is the first and only known vampire foot that had ten tentacles with suction cups, instead of the eight that today’s octopuses and vampire squid have.
