With just 4 days left before the US election many Trump and Harris voters view each other with disdain and suspicion
The USA has now entered the final stretch for the American elections and the division between the supporters of the two candidates, Kamala Harris and Donald Trump, is growing.
Joe Biden’s labeling of Donald Trump’s supporters as “trash” this week sparked a new wave of backlash, with the US president trying to explain that he doesn’t really believe that in order to calm spirits. The Associated Press spoke to supporters on both sides and reports on the mood in the US.
“I would say some of it is trash,” said Samantha Leister, 32, who went to see Kamala Harris at a rally in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania.
As for the rest? Leister – whose parents, like her father-in-law, support Trump – says they are “deluded”.
That same day, at Trump’s rally in Green Bay, Wisconsin, 44-year-old Shawn Vanderheyden, who was present there, commented on Harris’ supporters: “I just think they’re uneducated and they believe all the lies.” “It’s unfortunate.”
Vanderheyden still believes in some people who support the Democratic vice president, saying “I hope they open their eyes.”
With just 4 days to go before the US election many Trump and Harris voters view each other with disdain and suspicion. At best, they are confused by people who support the other party and worry about the future of the country after the election. This reticence among Americans is nothing new. However, it becomes deeper and more insurmountable. It even goes so far as to divide families and friends.
Some have said they believe the country is headed for an even more dramatic split.
Braxton Wadford, 20, predicted there will be a “mass exodus” of Americans after the election, regardless of who wins. He said that people on both sides cannot imagine living under the leadership of the opposing party.
“The American dream is turning into an abandonment of America,” said Wadford, who voted early for Trump in North Carolina.
Jennifer Phelan, 60, volunteered to work on the Harris campaign in the same state, pushing undecided voters to vote for the US vice president.
The Pew Research Center found that Democrats and Republicans are increasingly likely to view members of the other party as dumb, lazy, immoral or dishonest. And nearly all have a very or somewhat unfavorable view of the opposing party, according to a September AP-NORC poll.
Travis Waters, 54, argues that Trump supporters are “out of touch with reality.” He doesn’t have anyone close to him who is a Trump supporter — and he doesn’t want to add anyone.
“I would think that the people I choose to associate with are not people who support invading the Capitol, say Haitians eat pets and lie,” Waters said while waiting in line for Harris’ event in Harrisburg.
Norma Jeffcoat, 72, said she was hurt by the criticism she received when she said she supported Trump.
“I have loved ones who think I’m voting for a racist,” he said at a rally in North Carolina. “It breaks my heart. I love my country so much.”
Jeffcoat is devoted to the former president, who she said is suffering unfairly from criminal charges, political attacks and assassination attempts.
Nick Sandquist, 47, on the other hand, said Trump was a hypocrite who criticized Biden for his “garbage” comment.
“It’s ironic for Donald Trump to use the name to his advantage,” she said at a Harris rally in Wisconsin. “We’re not the type of people you need to worry about breaking into the Capitol,” he added.
He said he occasionally talks about the election with his brother and father, who support Trump, but “it’s not going too well.”
Annette Uhlenberg, 52, attended Harris’ rally in Raleigh and said she was inspired by her speech. So she took a picture of her campaign sign, wrote a message saying put country before party, and sent it to three of her friends who she thinks will vote for Trump. No one commented on her photo, but she says she hopes she made a start.
However, Donald Trump, dynamizing the already existing division that has been created, argues that only fraud can stop him from being elected president of the USA.
only fraud can stop him, Trump says recently
